What I did in Monterosso in a day

Monterosso, one of the five charming villages of Cinque Terre, is a destination filled with stunning landscapes, rich history, and a vibrant local culture. 

My day in Monterosso was a whirlwind of exploration, relaxation, and indulgence. Here’s a glimpse into my unforgettable day in Monterosso:

Morning Beach Bliss

My day began with the soothing sound of the waves gently crashing against the shore. I headed straight to the beautiful sandy beaches of Monterosso. 

Monterosso beaches are among my favorite beaches in the Cinque Terre area.

The golden sands and clear waters were inviting, and I couldn’t resist taking a refreshing morning swim. 

As I soaked up the Mediterranean sun, I felt the cares of the world melt away.

Old Town Charm

After my beach time, I ventured into Monterosso’s Old Town, a maze of narrow streets, colorful buildings, and charming shops. 

I explored the quaint alleys, admiring the local architecture and taking in the vibrant atmosphere. 

A visit to the Church of San Giovanni Battista or Church of St John the Baptist, with its striking façade, was a must.

Savoring Local Flavors

No visit to Monterosso is complete without indulging in the local cuisine. 

I sampled the famous Ligurian dish, trofie al pesto, a delightful combination of fresh pasta and the region’s renowned pesto sauce.

Dining at a seaside trattoria made the experience even more memorable.

Hiking Adventure

For the adventurous soul in me, I embarked on the Monterosso to Vernazza hiking trail. 

The trail offered breathtaking views of the rugged coastline, terraced vineyards, and lush forests. 

Each step revealed a new vista, and I was left in awe of the natural beauty surrounding me.

Wine Tasting

Cinque Terre is famous for its wine, and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to enjoy a glass of local wine, particularly the crisp white wine known as Sciacchetrà. 

I savored it while taking in the panoramic views of the sea and the village.

Sunset Serenity

As the day started to wind down, I made my way to the beach to witness a magnificent Monterosso sunset. 

The changing colors of the sky over the Ligurian Sea created a scene straight out of a postcard. It was a moment of pure serenity and wonder.

What I ate and drank in Monterosso

Monterosso, a jewel of Cinque Terre, not only offers breathtaking scenery but also tantalizing culinary experiences that are a feast for the senses. 

During my day in this charming village, I had the pleasure of indulging in a variety of local dishes and drinks that left me craving for more. 

Here’s a glimpse of what I ate and drank in Monterosso:

1. Trofie al Pesto

My culinary adventure in Monterosso began with a classic Ligurian dish, trofie al pesto. 

The trofie pasta, hand-rolled and perfectly cooked, was drenched in a rich and aromatic pesto sauce. 

The flavors were vibrant, and every bite was a celebration of the region’s culinary heritage.

2. Seafood Delights

Being a coastal village, Monterosso excels in seafood cuisine. 

I couldn’t resist trying dishes like grilled fish, calamari, and anchovies, all sourced fresh from the Ligurian Sea. 

Each dish was a testament to the village’s rich maritime tradition.

3. Sciacchetrà Wine

A visit to Cinque Terre is incomplete without savoring the local wine, and Monterosso is no exception. 

I had the pleasure of tasting the renowned Sciacchetrà, a crisp and aromatic white wine that perfectly complemented the seafood dishes. 

Its unique flavors lingered on my palate, making each sip a delightful experience.

4. Focaccia

For a quick snack or a light lunch, I enjoyed the local focaccia. 

Monterosso’s version is soft, fluffy, and topped with a sprinkle of sea salt. 

Whether plain or adorned with cherry tomatoes, it was a delightful treat.

5. Gelato by the Sea

To beat the afternoon heat, I treated myself to some gelato from an authentic gelateria artigianale.

The variety of flavors, from classic chocolate and vanilla to unique regional specialties, provided the perfect cool-down on a sunny day.

6. Limone Liquor

To round off my day in Monterosso, I tried Limoncino, a lemon liqueur that is a local specialty. 

Its zesty and citrusy notes were a refreshing way to cap off my culinary journey in this coastal paradise.

Each dish and drink I savored in Monterosso was a reflection of the region’s culture and flavors. 

From the freshest seafood to the aromatic pesto and the locally produced wines, every bite and sip was a delicious celebration of the village’s culinary heritage. 

Monterosso truly offers a gastronomic experience that leaves a lasting impression.

How I got to Monterosso al Mare Cinque Terre

The most convenient and popular way to reach Monterosso is by train. 

I began my journey from a nearby city, and the efficient Italian rail network made the trip smooth and enjoyable. 

Monterosso boasts its own train station, perfectly situated for travelers to access the village with ease.

Coastal Train Ride

The train ride itself was a visual delight. 

The tracks hugged the coastline, offering stunning vistas of the rugged cliffs, terraced vineyards, and the glistening Mediterranean Sea below.

It felt like I was embarking on a journey to a hidden paradise, with each passing moment unveiling the region’s natural beauty.

Another thing that I did and I advise you to do so is to buy a Cinque Terre Card Train, which includes the use of the ecological park buses, Wi-Fi connection, access to all trekking paths, and unlimited train travel between Levanto- Cinque Terre- La Spezia line.

Arrival at Cinque Terre Monterosso

As the train pulled into Monterosso’s station, I stepped onto the platform and was immediately greeted by the charm of this coastal village. 

The train station is located at a higher point, overlooking the town and providing a breathtaking panoramic view of Monterosso’s colorful buildings and the shimmering sea.

A Short Walk to Paradise

It was just a short walk downhill from the station to the heart of Monterosso and I felt so blessed that I had the change of exploring the Cinque Terre area. 

The picturesque harbor, quaint alleys, and the warm hospitality of the locals welcomed me.

The anticipation of exploring this coastal haven had me eagerly setting out to discover its treasures.

Accommodation in Monterosso

Guesthouses in Monterosso al Mare Italy

I stayed in Monterosso at Marymar, a small guesthouse with only a few rooms, beautifully furnished and conveniently located just 300 meters from the beach. The room was spacious and clean and I had AC and heating.

Hotels in Monterosso Cinque Terre

If you are looking for something larger, with more rooms, then go for Hotel Porto Roca. It offers fantastic views of the sea being climbed on top of a rock, about 5 minute walk from Monterosso center.
