Its strategic location, not far from Siena and Montalcino, made it the perfect base for my exploration of the Tuscan countryside.

San Quirico Val D Orcia is nestled in the heart of Tuscany, Italy, and getting there was a part of my exciting journey. 

Located in the enchanting Val d’Orcia region, this charming Tuscan town is well worth the visit.

It’s situated not far from renowned destinations like Siena and Montalcino, which adds to its appeal.

Getting There

For my journey, I opted for a scenic drive from Florence, allowing me to savor the picturesque Tuscan countryside.

The drive was approximately two and a half hours, and it was a wonderful introduction to the region’s beauty.

Alternatively, you can take a train to nearby towns such as Chiusi or Buonconvento and then arrange for local transportation to San Quirico D Orcia. 

This option is convenient if you prefer public transportation and want to avoid driving.

San Quirico DOrcia’s central location in Tuscany makes it a convenient base for exploring other nearby attractions.

What I did in San Quirico D’Orcia

My time in San Quirico D’Orcia was filled with memorable experiences and explorations. This charming Tuscan town offered a myriad of activities and sights to enjoy. Here’s a glimpse of what I did during my visit:

Roaming the Enchanting Historic Center

One of the highlights of my trip was wandering through the historic center of San Quirico D’Orcia. 

Street Via Dante Alighieri is the road that goes through the center of the city.

It is a colorful street with small shops and cafes where I stopped for a coffee and some pastry.

The cobblestone streets, medieval archways, and well-preserved buildings created a captivating atmosphere that transported me back in time. 

Every corner seemed to reveal a new and delightful surprise.

Admiring the Beauty of the Collegiate Church of San Quirico

The Collegiate Church of San Quirico was a true masterpiece of Romanesque architecture. 

Inside of this Romanesque church, I marveled at the intricate frescoes, sculptures, and the serene ambiance that enveloped this sacred space. 

During my visit I found out that initially the Collegiate was a rural church in 8th century and it was rebuilt in the 12th century.

It was a peaceful and reflective moment in the heart of the town.

The Bell Tower of this church is of later construction but fits well in the picture.

Other attractions visited by me on my day spent in San Quirico are:

  • Church of Santa Maria Assunta, built in 1062
  • Chapel of the Madonna di Vitaleta, where you can find a statue of Virgin Mary made by Andrea della Robbia in 1533

Finding Serenity at the Horti Leonini Gardens

The Horti Leonini Gardens offered a serene escape from the bustling world inspired by the life of its creator, Diomede Leoni. 

The beautifully manicured gardens with sculptures, fountains, and lush greenery provided a tranquil retreat that soothed my soul.

It was the perfect place to relax and unwind.

In the middle of the garden, you can find the statue of Cosimo III de Medici, made by Giuseppe Mazzuoli in 1688.

Uncovering the Wonders of the Palazzo Chigi

The Palazzo Chigi was a true gem of Renaissance architecture. 

Exploring its opulent rooms and art collections provided me with a deeper understanding of the town’s rich cultural heritage.

Each room was a testament to the town’s historical significance.

Walking the Medieval City Walls

Climbing the medieval walls surrounding San Quirico D’Orcia was an adventure in itself. 

From the top, I was rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. 

It was the ideal spot to capture the town’s beauty with my camera and take in the stunning landscapes.

Savoring the Delights of Local Cuisine

Tuscany is renowned for its delectable cuisine, and San Quirico D’Orcia did not disappoint. 

I indulged in traditional Tuscan dishes at local trattorias, and each meal was a gastronomic delight. 

From pici pasta to Tuscan pecorino cheese, I savored every bite.

Embarking on a Wine Tasting Adventure 

Being in the heart of the Val d’Orcia region, I couldn’t resist the allure of wine tasting. 

Exploring the rich flavors of the area, especially the renowned Brunello di Montalcino wine, was a memorable experience.

On my way to Pienza, when I left San Quirico I stopped to the Chapel of the Madonna di Vitaleta, a hidden gem nestled in the middle of the Tuscan hills.

Agriturismo next to San Quirico D’Orcia

If you are looking for something nestled in the middle of the Tuscan hills but still close to San Quirico, then go for Agriturismo Poderino.

This property features an open-air bath, nice terrace, and a garden. The host is super friendly and the homemade pastry are absolutely fabulous.
